Stricter standards for market access
In addition to the sector guides, the buyers of agricultural raw materials and products may set additional requirements via private (or ‘commercial’) standards. These requirements follow from consumers’ increasing expectations with regard to food safety and traceability. Consumers are also becoming increasingly critical with regard to the environment, intensive production methods, ethical aspects (GMOs, animal welfare, etc.) and sustainability. Buyers and retail apply the consumers’ demands to farm level in the form of statutory and extra-statutory requirements that are included in private standards.
